The 51year old, who hails from Delta State, was picked up late Wednesday, September 9, 2015, by operatives of the EFCC. Heavy Protest In Unilag Over The Death Of Electrocuted Student

Academic activities at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, were paralysed on Wednesday as students of the institution protested against the death of a female undergraduate who was electrocuted on Tuesday.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the student, Oluchi Anekwe, a 300-Level first-class student of the Department of Accounting, was returning from an evening mass with her younger sister at about 7pm on Tuesday when a high-tension wire fell on her. It was gathered that Anekwe had entered the New Halls through the Eni Njoku Hostel side to buy an item. She was said to be walking out of the hostel when the wire fell on her. Anekwe was reportedly rushed to the medical centre, where she was said to have died a few minutes later.

It was gathered that angry students, who heard of the lady’s death on Wednesday took to the university’s gates around 8am, shut the gates in the school, calling on the Vice-Chancellor to address them.

When our correspondent got to the campus, vehicular movements in and out of the institution were obstructed, while policemen from Sabo and Bariga divisions tried in vain to calm down the protesting students.

While some of the students squeezed themselves into commercial buses, wielding brooms and clubs, and driving around the campus, others thronged the gates and chanted songs of protest against the authorities for what they described as ‘the negligence in upgrading the institution’s facilities’.

Senators Probe Power Sector With Lamp And Touch

Yesterday, The senate was deliberating and probing the power sector when a power outage occured. The anger of the senators was evident as most of them were seen hurling curses at PHCN and accusing the executives of power distribution companies present of intentional sabotage.

Power was cut at least twice within a period of six minutes between 2.20pm and 2.26pm. At the third outage at about 3.12 pm, the chairman of the committee conducting the probe, Abubakar Kyari could no longer hide his frustration.

“Are you tired? Are you guys calling your people to do this?” he asked the executives of the power companies present at the probe.

Things were to get even worst. Moments after he spoke two power outages followed at 3.26pm and 3.31 pm.

At this point, the probe panel resorted to receiving presentations using lights from media cameras, torches and rechargeable lamps.

Meanwhile,  the Director-General of the Bureau for Public Enterprises, Mr. Benjamin Dikki, told the senate committee did not know how much it cost to privatise the country’s power plant and should be given time to present the exact amount.

He said he needed to find out the cost of building the power plants.

Dikki was responding to a question from a committee member who asked him to  “tell Nigerians how much the power plants were sold because during Tuesday’s hearing, the committee was told $USD 8.23bn was what was spent on these plants prior to the privatisation.’’

“I do not know how much the (power) plants were constructed. I will make available the documents later,” the BPE DG answered.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Godknows Igali, had denied speculations that the Federal Government was planning a wholesale privatisation of the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

He said, “I want to correct an impression, government has no plan to privatise TCN; what we are doing is to work out an arrangement so that the market will pay for services.”

Cecil The Lion Killer, Walter Palmer, To Return To Work

Walter Palmer faced a huge backlash online over his killing of Cecil the lion

The US dentist who sparked an international outcry after killing a lion in Zimbabwe has said he did nothing wrong and is planning to return to work this week.

Speaking in his first interview since the July killing of Cecil the lion, Walter Palmer said he had been unaware of the animal's significance.
He also revealed that there had been "some safety issues" for his family.
Zimbabwe has said it wishes to extradite and prosecute Mr Palmer.
Speaking publicly for the first time about the incident, he told the Associated Press and Minneapolis Star Tribune that he had acted legally, but said that if he had known who the animal was he would not have killed it.

"If I had known this lion had a name and was important to the country or a study obviously I wouldn't have taken it," Mr Palmer said. "Nobody in our hunting party knew before or after the name of this lion."

The Minnesota dentist admitted that he wounded the lion with an arrow but denied that it had subsequently taken 40 hours to track down and kill it. He also denied claims by the Zimbabwean authorities that it had been killed by a gun, saying that an arrow had been used.
The 55-year-old is believed to have paid $50,000 (£32,000) to hunt a lion in Zimbabwe's largest game reserve.

Photo: Pick Pocket Nabbed in Mile 2 Traffic

Imagine The Innocent Look On His Face
Ubi Monday one of the robbers terrorizing motorist along the ever busy Mile 2 road in Lagos has been arrested by the Lagos state police command. The rogue pictured above was arrested after a distress call was placed to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) by one Orji Ogbonnaya who was robbed of his N28,000 by the suspect.

According to The Nation , Ubi who lives at Olutimeyin Street, Ayobo-Ipaja when interrogated said he is a member of the syndicate operating in Mile 2, Ajegunle and environs.
“I used to sell second-hand clothes at Kantangwa market along Lagos-Abeokuta expressway. One of my customers introduced me to robbery. He taught me how to pick pockets without people’s knowledge. I intentionally sat beside him in the bus because we know our victims. This is not my first time. I have been in this profession for almost two years. I want the government to forgive me now that I know there is no gain in stealing,” Ubi said
Narrating how he was robbed, the victim, Orji Ogbonnaya said
"I boarded a bus to Mile 2 from Oshodi. On getting to Toyota, the suspect came in because there were still spaces in the bus. I didn’t have an inkling that he had a mission. I adjusted a bit from him and he also did making him closer to me. When I noticed that he had removed the money from my pocket after I touched my thigh, I pretended as if nothing had happened. Then I started looking if I could see any police patrol vehicle. When we reached Mile 2, he wanted to alight from the bus but I held his trousers. As we alighted from the bus, I called the attention of the RRS patrol team I saw around. Unknown to me, he had passed the money to one of his gang members. But when the police surrounded us, a man dropped the money on the road and ran away. It was when the suspect was being taken to the police headquarters that he confessed stealing my money and passing it to his partner.”

Court Sentences Nigerian Man To Life In Jail For Murder

Abdul Adewale Kekere-Ekun has been sentenced to life imprisonment in London over the murder of 18-year-old Marcus Hall in 2001. Abdul was apparently part of a gang that beat and stabbed Hall to death 14 years ago, and after committing the murder, he fled to Nigeria. 5 people out of the gang have been convicted for the murder so far. Follow jump to see how police caught him and how he managed to hide all these years: Abdul was identified in a CCTV footage of the attack where he was wearing a distinctive checked coat.

Detectives went to a designer clothes store in London where it was discovered that the jacket was one of only 9 sold in the UK, and Abdul was listed as one of the buyers. . When the police raided his home in London, he had already left the country. However, EFCC, arrested him in Lagos, Nigeria on February 12, 2015 for Internet fraud, only for checks by the agency to reveal that he is on the wanted list of the UK Police.

The UK Police had difficulties tracking him down because he frequently disguises himself with several aliases (Adebayo Dalvin James Ekun, Adeba Yo Kekere-Ekun, Adeba Yo Muta Lito Kekere-Ekun, James Dalvin, James Adebayo, Dave Bell, David Aaro Hall, Anthony Higgins, Lavelle Holder, Dalrin James, Dalvin James and Gary Edwin Plummer) After all of his running and hiding, he was finally extradited back to the UK where he admitted to the killing and was jailed for life with a minimum term of 10 years.

Fayose Decries The Invasion Of Akwa Ibom Govt House By The DSS Men, Recommends Daura's Sack

Written below is the full text  of the press statement addressed on behalf of the governor of Ekiti state, Ayo Fayose by his special assistant on Public Communications and new media, Lere Olayinka yesterday.

I have called you here on behalf of His Excellency, Mr Ayodele Fayose, the governor of Ekiti State to address you on the strangeand anti-democracy conducts of the Department of State Security (DSS) since AlhajiLawal Daura took over as the Director General. Yesterday, the AkwaIbom State Government House in Uyowas invaded by armed men from the Special Squad of the DSS.
They invaded the Presidential Wing of the Government House in a commando-liked manner, ransacked it, intimidated and harassed the occupants, claiming that they were searching for bomb and documents!

One wonders when the Government House of Akwa-Ibom State turned to a factory where bombs are made. Also, we wonder why men of the DSS were overzealously looking for bomb in AkwaIbom State Government House, instead of the Boko Haram ravaged North Eastern part of Nigeria. Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in AkwaIbom State, Mr. Austin Okojie was picked up by men of the DSS in July.

The REC was detained and later asked to report daily to their office for interrogation. Interestingly, the DSS under Alhaji Lawal Daura that has turned Akwa Ibom State and other States into centre of its draconian operations has not deemed it necessary to invite for questioning, the Yobe State INEC REC, Mr. Abu Zarma in whose bank account N15 million alleged to be a bribe was found. From the barbaric act of the DSS yesterday and other actions of Security Service under Alhaji Lawal Daura in the last few weeks, one can conclude that Daura is taking Nigeriaback to the 1984 era of General MohammaduBuhari and this is unfortunate.

No doubt, the Director General (DG)DSS, Lawal Daura is acting out a sinister script of taking over Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) controlled States in the South-South and South East by whatever means. Obviously, Thursday invasion of the AkwaIbom Government House by men of the DSS and arrest of the State INEC REC are part of this sinister plotby the All Progressives Congress (APC) to circumvent the will of the people of the South-South and South-East States controlled by the PDP, using the DSS, but it will fail ultimately.

To say the least, invasion of the AkwaIbomState Government House on Thursday ordered by Daura, is a rape of democracy and invitation to chaos and anarchy. It is authoritarian, dictatorial and I condemn it strongly. It is unfortunate that this is happening under President Buhari’s watch, and painful that AlhajiLawal Daura is drawing Nigeria back to the Military era. If a GovernmentHouse occupied by a Governor who enjoys the same immunity enjoys by the President as provided by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria could be invaded by a Special Squad of the DSS, it means Lawal Daura is moving this country towards dictatorship and it must be said clearly that Daura and his DSS menwill definitely have Nigerians to contend with.

As for me, I will continue to talk because Nigeria belongs to all of us. Nigeria is not a banana republic that can be ruled anyhow by anyone and Mr Lawal Daura and those urging him on should know that this reign of brute force over constitutional democracy will fail. This is because we have seen them operate before and here they are now, trying to take us back to that inglorious era of dictatorship and barbarism where Nigerians were treated with contempt.

This time around, it is a democracy that can never accommodate that 1984 era of draconian rule. Most importantly, Lawal Daura and his desperate men should know that here in Nigeria of today, the power of the people is greater than the power of those in power and the people will always rise in defence of their government no matter how strong the aggression.

It is on this note that I call on President Buhari to call Alhaji Lawal Daura to order. He should be made to know that his activities since he assumed office as the DG DSS are of growing concern to Nigerians and that he is becoming extremely controversial. His actions as the DG DSS are regrettable, unfortunate, condemnable and unacceptable because he has come to symbolise dictatorship, which democracy abhors. Alhaji Lawal Daura should know that he is holding the office of DG DSS that he presently occupies in trust for all Nigerians and such office is not one that can be turned into instrument of political witch-hunt.

If Alhaji Daura continues with his use of the DSS to harass, intimidate and assault the constitution of Nigeria, President Buhari may have to show to Nigerians that he is not a party to the use of the
security agency to witch-hunt his political opponents by sacking the DG DSS.

Etcetera Writes...Buhari's First Semester Report Card

And he says....

We often use benchmarks as measures of progress. ‘How is your favourite football team doing at the beginning of this season?’ ‘How many words does your one-year-old son say in a minute?’ And, of course, there’s the time-honoured measure of how well a new president is doing after 100 days in office. In case you hadn’t heard, that benchmark is here for President Buhari.
You may feel it’s a little impertinent for me to issue a report card for President Buhari on his performance during his first 100 days in office. Yes, I’m not his teacher, and he’s not my student.

But what the heck? It’s a free country and everyone else is doing it. So here it goes:

Confidence:- Buhari has brought back confidence in governance. Especially in tough times, the confident presence of a leader begets confidence in those that he or she leads. With his steady demeanour, optimistic outlook and command, Buhari embodies confidence. The number of incompetent heads of parastatals he has sacked so far reflects that sentiment. The percentage of Nigerians who think the country is on the right track is up. Grade: A1

Pace of Governance:– When the pressure is high, leaders need perspective. They need swift action. Buhari is working on so many things all by himself that it’s sometimes hard to keep track of all of them. He has too much on his plate. He should get into perspective and allow others do the job where he can’t. It won’t be a surprise to discover that the president is in charge of his travel itinerary, meeting schedule and other range of issues on his plate. He runs the risk of edging toward a burn out. Well, some argue that the president is keeping a pace that works for him. Grade: F9

Communications:– Effective leadership communication is outcome oriented and audience specific. President Buhari is clearly not an articulate communicator and he doesn’t do enough to shape his message to the audience. Hearing Mr. President pronounce APC leaves you lost and wondering if you heard him correctly. Maybe his media aides should have used this as an excuse to exonerate him from the hundred things he promised to have achieved before his first 100 days in office that has now capped him as a liar. Buhari’s tone of voice usually stays within a fairly narrow range. He could do better here. Grade: F9

Team Player: – There are two major factors on this distinction. The first is to get a great team in place. The second is to get your ego out of the way and allow the team to do their job. Buhari has stumbled here and most people will agree that his failure to appoint ministers in his first 100 days in office has been a setback to governance. Whether you agree with me or not, Buhari can’t be president and ministers all by himself. We need competent hands to man the various ministries. You cannot achieve a lot in three and half months without the support of a team. Good leaders are the keepers of the what, not the masters of the how. Assembling a strong team also helps in establishing an agenda. Buhari needs to realise that he’ll likely never have more momentum than he has now if he doesn’t put a team on the ground. Grade: F9

Accountability and Responsibility: President Buhari has done fairly well with the campaign for government officials to be held accountable for their actions or inactions. He has brought a sense of transparency and has taken some interesting first steps in promoting government accountability. I think this is an area where there is a lot more to do however. For instant, there hasn’t really been a clear explanation yet as to how he is going to tackle corruption and how the country will avoid being ripped apart by government officials in the years to come. Grade: C

Economy: – This has so far been one of the president’s worst subjects. He may be making a grave mistake focusing all his attention on recouping looted funds instead of providing the basic needs of the people. Never in history has this approach successfully led a country out of recession. This might lead to an unhappy ending, and more inflation. The continuous drop of the nation’s currency is stark reminder that we are still in the worst slump in 50 years. Grade: F9

National Security:- Nigerians are still not experiencing any sense of security. People are dying and getting maimed everyday on the streets by hoodlums and touts. Boko Haram insurgents are still using the yet to be found Chibok girls for their bombings. Armed robbers are having a field day carting away properties. The country is still not safe. Grade: F9

Finally, President Buhari’s first 100 days could have been a lot better, but, scarily, could have been worse. Let’s hope the President gets some serious tutoring on the economy 101. I will be anxious and hopeful to see improvements and real results next semester.
